How to Judge Whether Something Will Succeed: Timing, Position, and People

Judging success isn't about one palace being good or bad — synthesize: do cycles give timing (heaven), do relevant palaces have support (earth), is your own state good (people)? All three make success likely.

"Can I succeed starting a business this year?" "Will we marry?" "Will I pass this exam?" — judging whether something will succeed is Zi Wei's most practical function. But many look at one palace: Lu in Career means "yes," Hong Luan in Spouse means "marry." Too crude. Whether something succeeds depends on three dimensions: timing, position, and people.

Timing — do cycles activate relevant palaces, is the moment right; position — do relevant palaces have triple-direction support, does the environment cooperate; people — your own state (Life, Body, minor cycle) and ability to seize the opportunity. All three support: likely success; one or two: effort needed but possible; none: better wait.

Timing: Is the Moment Right

Check major cycle — has it reached relevant palaces? For entrepreneurship, is cycle Life or Career activated?

Check annual — do this year's transformations aspect relevant palaces?

Check monthly — which month is ripest.

Bad timing — chart shows success but moment hasn't arrived; forcing wastes effort.

Good timing — "even pigs fly in the right wind"; going with the flow doubles results.

Position: Does the Environment Cooperate

Check triple direction of relevant palaces — auspicious stars, Lu/Quan/Ke support?

Check malefic obstacles — Qing Yang/Tuo Luo/Huo/Ling in triple are resistance.

Where is Ji — Ji in relevant palace or triple is a "blockage."

Benefactors — Kui/Yue/Zuo Fu/You Bi in triple mean help.

Good position — environment supports, resources in place, smooth execution.

Poor position — environment uncooperative, "hero with no battlefield"; change environment or wait.

People: Are You Ready

Check Life and Body — your core ability and state.

Check minor cycle — your personal state this year.

Check for self-Ji in relevant palaces — sabotaging yourself.

Check your past preparation — opportunity on the chart but you're not ready means you can't seize it.

People is most important — timing and position exist, but if your state is poor or ability insufficient, opportunity slips away.

Reading Order

To judge success:

  1. Define the question — what are you asking; find relevant palaces.
  2. Check timing — are cycles activated.
  3. Check position — is there triple support.
  4. Check people — your state and ability.
  5. All three support — go for it.
  6. Two support — proceed but fix the weak one.
  7. None support — wait; don't force it.
After reading, compare it with your own chart — it makes more sense than concepts alone.Quick Chart →
