Do you do this too: after casting, immediately look for Hua Ji, find it and start worrying, then see a malefic and get more anxious. But if you step back and see the whole chart, that Hua Ji may not matter at all in the big picture. Reading a chart is like reading a map — first see which city you're in and which highway, then which exit. Starting with exits gets you lost.
The correct order is "big to small": first the natal chart's overall structure (patterns, Life triple), then major cycles (decade theme and trend), then annual (specific events this year), finally individual stars and transformations. With the right big picture, details have meaning; with the wrong big picture, accurate details are useless.
Four Levels of Reading
Level 1: Natal chart — who are you? Core traits and life structure.
Level 2: Major cycle — what's this decade's theme? Upward or downward?
Level 3: Annual — what happens this year? In which specific field?
Level 4: Details — specific meaning of a star, transformation, palace.
Read top-down, not bottom-up.
Why Not Start with Details
Details mislead — a Hua Ji may be unimportant in the whole chart, but staring at it makes you think "I'm doomed."
Details need context — same Qing Yang in Life vs Health means completely different things.
Details cause anxiety — too many details; starting there makes you increasingly afraid.
Big picture determines detail meaning — in a wealth cycle, Wealth Hua Ji may just mean "hard-earned"; in a loss cycle, it means "real loss."
What to See in the Big Picture
Life and triple direction — core ability and life tone.
Patterns — any formed? How good?
Body palace —后天 direction.
Cycle trend — which cycle now? Is it good?
Cycle-natal relationship — is the cycle "fulfilling" or "compensating" the natal?
Reading Order
Next time, follow this order:
- Life and Body — who is this person, where do they develop后天.
- Triple direction — can core ability land.
- Patterns — overall structure.
- Major cycle — where are you now, what's the decade theme.
- Annual — what specifically happens this year.
- Finally details — individual stars, transformations.
- Remember: forest first, then trees.
