Don't Only Read Good or Bad: Every Star Has Two Sides

There are no absolutely auspicious or malefic stars in Zi Wei. Auspicious stars misused become burdens; malefics used well are drive and breakthrough. Read how stars manifest in context, not labels.

Many learn Zi Wei by memorizing a "good/bad list": Zi Wei and Tian Fu are auspicious, Qing Yang and Tuo Luo are malefic, Lu is good, Ji is bad. But in real reading you find: Zi Wei in Life without auxiliaries is a "lone ruler," not fun; Qing Yang in Career with Zi Wei is "emperor with a blade," super execution. Good/bad isn't a star's attribute but its "performance" in a specific combination.

Every star has two sides: Zi Wei can be emperor or lone ruler, Tian Fu can be treasury or conservative, Tan Lang can be versatile or greedy, Qing Yang can be drive or harm. Three things matter: who the star is with (combination), which palace it's in (position), and brightness (state). The same star can be angel or devil in different combinations and positions.

The Other Side of Auspicious Stars

Zi Wei — emperor star, but without auxiliaries it's a lone ruler, lonely at the top.

Tian Fu — treasury star, but an empty treasury is "a safe with no money," conservative and stubborn.

Tai Yang — light star, but fallen in Hai/Zi is "night sun," gives much, receives little.

Tai Yin — gentle star, but fallen in Si/Wu is "daytime moon," emotionally unstable.

Hua Lu — resource star, but too much Lu "overwhelms," too many opportunities scatter focus.

The Positive Side of Malefics

Qing Yang — drive and execution; in Career it's "daring and competitive."

Tuo Luo — persistence and deep cultivation; in research palaces it's "ten years sharpening one sword."

Huo Xing — explosive power and action, suited to competitive fields.

Ling Xing — patience and strategy; "Ling Chang Tuo Wu" pattern used well produces great generals.

Di Kong/Di Jie — inspiration and breakthrough, suited to creative, artistic, spiritual fields.

How to Judge a Star's Performance

Combination — with auspicious stars it expresses positive; with malefics it may turn negative.

Palace — in Life it's personality, in Career it's work, in Health it's health; different meanings.

Brightness — temple/prosperous expresses positive; fallen tends negative.

Transformations — Lu/Quan/Ke draw out positive; Ji draws out negative.

Major cycle — stars come "alive" when activated by cycles; otherwise they're just "potential."

Reading Order

For any star:

  1. Don't label it "good" or "bad."
  2. See who it's with — combination determines performance.
  3. See which palace — position determines domain.
  4. Check brightness — state determines power.
  5. Check transformations and cycles — timing determines when it expresses.
  6. There are no bad stars, only stars in the wrong position.
After reading, compare it with your own chart — it makes more sense than concepts alone.Quick Chart →
