Stems and Branches Aren't Just Symbols: They Determine Where Transformations Come From

Stems and branches aren't just charting symbols in Zi Wei — stems determine transformations, branches determine palace positions. Without them you can't read the "direction" of transformations — where Lu comes from, where Ji goes.

Many people think stems and branches are "most basic knowledge" — memorize and forget. But they aren't background; they're "living tools" for reading. Stems determine transformations — every Hua Lu/Quan/Ke/Ji "flies" from a stem. Branches determine palace positions. Without stems and branches, you don't know "where money comes from" (which palace Lu flies from) or "where you're stuck" (which palace Ji flies to).

Stems have two roles: first, the birth-year stem determines natal transformations — the birth year stem makes four stars transform, "given by heaven." Second, each palace's stem can fly transformations — Life palace stem transforming stars means "where you direct energy"; other palace stems mean "where that domain's energy flows." This is the basis of "flying star" method.

Role of Stems

Birth-year stem — determines natal transformations, innate, fixed, lifelong.

Palace stem flying — each palace's stem can fly transformations, representing energy flow direction.

Major cycle stem — the cycle palace's stem determines cycle transformations, this decade's energy flow.

Annual stem — determines annual transformations, this year's energy flow.

Without stems, you don't know where transformations "come from and go to."

Role of Branches

Twelve branches fix twelve palace positions — Zi is due north, Wu due south.

Branches determine cycle direction — yang-male/yin-female clockwise, yin-male/yang-female counterclockwise, following branch order.

Branches have five elements — Hai/Zi = water, Yin/Mao = wood, Si/Wu = fire, Shen/You = metal, Chen/Xu/Chou/Wei = earth.

Branch elements affect star brightness — e.g., Tai Yang is brightest in Wu (fire), fallen in Zi (water).

How to Read Flying Transformations

Natal transformations — "given by heaven"; Lu in a palace means innate affinity, Ji means innate fixation.

Life palace flying — "what you do"; Life stem flying Lu into Wealth means "you direct energy to earning."

Other palace flying — "brought by others/environment"; Career stem flying Lu into Wealth means "work brings money."

Flying shows direction — which palace Lu flies from and into = where energy comes and goes.

Ji flying is especially important — where Ji flies from and into = where the block comes from and where it sticks.

Reading Order

When you see stems and branches:

  1. Birth-year stem — which four stars have natal transformations.
  2. Which palaces natal transformations are in — innate affinities and fixations.
  3. Life palace stem flying — where you direct energy.
  4. Other palace stems flying — energy flow between domains.
  5. Cycle/annual stems — this decade/year's energy direction.
  6. Don't just see "what" transformation — see "where it comes from and goes to."
After reading, compare it with your own chart — it makes more sense than concepts alone.Quick Chart →
