Life and Body are not random; the birth month and hour derive them by a fixed rule. Derive them once yourself and you will see why a wrong hour shifts the Life Palace by a whole palace.
What This Question Is Really Asking
Many cast charts for years yet cannot say why the Life Palace sits where it does. The rule is not hard; they simply never walked start-month-at-Yin, count months forward, count hours backward for Life and forward for Body.
The Underlying Logic
Step one sets the month base: treat Yin as month one and count clockwise through the branches to the lunar birth month, obtaining a month-base palace.
Step two starts Zi-hour at that base; for Life count the birth hour backward along the branches (Zi, Hai, Xu, You...) and the landing is Life.
For Body start Zi at the same base and count the birth hour forward (Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao...); thus Life and Body always sit symmetrically on two sides.
With Life fixed, place the other eleven palaces in fixed reverse order; understanding this lets you tell, around midnight births, leap months or uncertain hours, whether input or app setting is wrong.
A Step-by-Step Way to Read It
- Take an empty chart labeled with the twelve branches and locate Yin
- Start month one at Yin and count clockwise to your lunar birth month; note the base palace
- From that base start Zi and count your birth hour backward along branches to land Life
- From the same base start Zi and count forward to your birth hour to land Body
- From Life place the other eleven palaces in reverse order to build the chart skeleton
- Compare your manual result with the app; once they match, place stars and interpret
Three Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Only clicking the app without ever deriving Life/Body, unable to catch a wrong hour
Mistake 2: Reversing the backward-Life/forward-Body directions and getting both wrong
Mistake 3: Plugging the solar month as the lunar month and skewing the very first step
Back to Your Own Chart
Placing Life and Body is the foundation; deriving it once turns the black box into a checkable rule. Next time charts disagree or the hour is uncertain, you can verify it yourself instead of trusting any tool blindly.
Reading Order
- Cast the natal chart first and locate the palaces and major stars tied to placing the Life and Body palaces before judging anything
- Open the triple-direction of those palaces and count the auspicious, malefic and assistant stars separately
- Check where the natal Four Transformations land to set the chart's baseline tone
- Read the decade-limit transformations to see whether the placing the Life and Body palaces line is activated in this stage
- Then read the annual transformations and the year's palace to pin down this year's trigger and timing
- Layer natal, decade and year before concluding, then decide how to act rather than labeling good or bad
