The annual cycle, often called liu nian, shows which part of a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart becomes active during a particular year. It does not label the whole year as good or bad. It identifies the topic that needs attention, while stars, palace links, and the Four Transformations describe how that topic may unfold.
Locate the Active Palace First
If the annual cycle activates the Wealth Palace, start with income, collection, spending, debt, and contracts. If it activates the Career Palace, look at role, workload, authority, and changes in position. An activated Travel Palace shifts attention to clients, relocation, online platforms, or unfamiliar environments. The palace defines the subject before any star is interpreted.
Check the Opposite Palace and Triad
The active palace needs structural support. Annual Wealth should be read with Career and Travel to see whether income has a role and a market behind it. Annual Career should be checked against the opposite Spouse Palace because a heavier work year can change time, partnership, and family negotiations. A strong main palace with weak supporting palaces may create activity without a durable result.
Add Stars and Transformations as Conditions
For example, annual Wealth with Wu Qu and Hua Lu may support measurable income or stronger collection, provided Career and Travel can deliver work and customers. The same Wealth Palace with Hua Ji may point instead to delayed payment, tighter margins, or debt pressure; it is a reason to inspect terms, not a prediction of loss. Annual Career with Hua Quan can bring decision-making power, but the added authority usually comes with accountability. Annual Travel with Tian Ma and Hua Ke may favor a move, launch, or external presentation when the wider triad is stable.
Chart-Reading Order
Read the year in five steps: identify the activated palace; inspect its main stars and strength; compare the opposite palace and triad; note where Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke, and Hua Ji land; then compare the annual signal with the current ten-year cycle and natal chart. Translate the result into one practical question, such as whether to protect cash flow, accept responsibility, or test a new market.
